Description
Heliconias transport us quickly to the tropics. These plants resemble bananas with large tropical leaves but also gingers with their rhizomes and unusual flowers. The big lobster claw Heliconias are giants growing 10-12 feet much too big for the home. Enter this captivating little dwarf, although the flowers are pointing upwards, they are Heliconia flowers. The bright red flowers bloom usually in the winter. The dramatic tropical foliage is a great backdrop to create that relaxing island vibe. Best to give bright light, and regular water. Make sure the mix is draining but hold moisture well. The plants can become root bound when big so repot as needed, but they bloom best a little cramped.
